Calculated Campaign: How a narcissist attempts to turn others against you.
These ten methods frequently appear in the narcissist's playbook: First, they might engage in gossiping and spreading rumors, twisting facts painting you in a negative light to others.
Then they may play the victim, portraying themselves as wronged and eliciting sympathy, which inadvertently paints you as the aggressor.
Triangulation, involving a third party to validate their perspective and invalidate yours, is a common tactic.
They also excel at gaslighting, making you question your own sanity and perception of reality, which can then make you appear unstable to others.
Character assassinations, systematically deconstructing your reputation, and public humiliation, designed to embarrass you and undermine your standing, are frequently employed.
Narcissists may also use emotional blackmail, making you feel guilty or responsible for their actions to control your behavior, which can be viewed poorly by outside observers.
They often engage in selective storytelling, highlighting any perceived flaws or mistakes you've made while conveniently omitting their own failings which can build up a negative portrayal of you over time.
Forming alliances, proactively aligning themselves with others to build a counter-network against you, and the use of love-bombing, initially showering others with affection and then turning that affection into leverage against you are also common ways in which they manipulate others.
Finally, and perhaps most damaging, is isolating you from your support system, making you increasingly dependent on them and more vulnerable to their manipulation by severing your connections to people who could see their deception.
